The sign still says SMS in a few corners of the lot, and that is fine. Fox Amusements and South Metro Studios are in the middle of turning the old studio property into California Spectrum Resort — Hollywood streets, a Southern California boardwalk, Surf City USA, and the Grand Hotel on one piece of ground.
The boardwalk is open now. Surf City USA is running. Closed construction zones stay closed, and we will not pretend a soundstage is a ride until it is a ride. Guests who knew SMS California will recognize the bones. Everyone else can start with the pier.
The Grand Hotel takes the Art Deco middle of the campus. Vibe shopping and the walk to historic South Metro Studios are part of the stay, not a shuttle brochure.
